Advanced Clinical Data Analytics

There is potential for rich and complex health data to be translated into new treatments, prevention strategies, and, ultimately, clinical impact.

The Advanced Clinical Data Analytics project develops and assesses advanced clinical data capture methods to enhance paediatric precision medicine outcomes. Leveraging historical and near real-time clinical data, electronic medical records and administrative data currently confined within hospital records, the platform aims to expedite diagnoses, improve treatment recommendations, enhance clinical management of patients, and provide insights into environmental and clinical history affecting childhood diseases.

It is interconnected with the other Luminesce Alliance Data Enabling Platform projects below to create a comprehensive research data ecosystem for NSW, driving forward paediatric precision medicine initiatives.

  1. Advanced Genome and Transcriptome Analytics project: Develop an advanced molecular profiling analysis platform with novel methods and evaluate whether these improve the rates of diagnosis and treatment recommendations in cancer and rare diseases.
  2. Kids Link Data Enabling project: Harnessing data linkage by sourcing clinical, genomic, and administrative health, treatment, and observational datasets to identify determinants of disease, assess effective treatment and pathways of health care and associated health outcomes, and identify the most effective clinical interventions and therapies.
  • Luminesce Alliance is supporting Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network and the wider health system in seeking to develop new methods and infrastructure to access, extract, and interpret clinical and administrative data, currently locked within electronic medical records and rarely accessible to individual research projects. This involves developing digital clinical decision support tools that can translate increasingly complex precision medicine data into clinical action.

This aligns with the Government’s priorities on digital health and eHealth to advance outcomes through precision medicine. It also supports the NSW Government’s policy to strengthen the state’s data research ecosystem and attract organisations to leverage its data assets. The Advanced Clinical Data Analytics Enabling Platform is about delivering on these objectives by transforming the way we use and interpret hospital and health data to improve healthcare outcomes.

  • The Advanced Clinical Data Analytics will strengthen our health system and research capability by

    • Enabling the standardisation and consistency of clinical datasets for analysis.
    • Developing a metadata catalogue and dictionary allowing clinicians/researchers to know what clinical data exists, the format, and the quality of data available.
    • Improving data quality with clinical department collaboration and utilising evaluation and assessment tools.
    • Converting structured electronic medical records into a common data model to facilitate data collaboration across hospitals and other institutions.
    • Conducting feasibility analysis for enhancing clinical analytics for paediatric cancer.
